Install Utterkey

About two minutes. You only do this once.

Mac (Apple Silicon: M1 or newer)

  1. Download Utterkey for Mac and open the downloaded file.
  2. Drag Utterkey into Applications in the window that opens.
  3. Open Utterkey from Applications. macOS says “Apple could not verify Utterkey is free of malware.” Click Done.
  4. Open System Settings → Privacy & Security, scroll down, click Open Anyway next to Utterkey and enter your password.
  5. In Utterkey’s setup, allow Microphone and Accessibility (System Settings → Privacy & Security → Accessibility → turn on Utterkey).
  6. Click into any text box, hold Right Option, speak, and let go.
Why the warning? Utterkey is an independent app that isn’t sold through Apple’s App Store, so macOS asks you to confirm it once. Your voice is processed on your Mac and never uploaded.

Still blocked, or it says the app “is damaged”?

Open the Terminal app, paste this line, press Return, then open Utterkey again:

xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine /Applications/Utterkey.app

Windows 10 / 11 (beta)

  1. Download Utterkey for Windows and open Utterkey-Setup-win-x64.exe.
  2. Windows may say “Windows protected your PC.” Click More info → Run anyway. This appears because Utterkey is a new independent app.
  3. Follow the installer. It installs just for you, and needs no administrator password.
  4. If Windows asks whether Utterkey may use the microphone, click Yes. If dictation can’t hear you, open Settings → Privacy & security → Microphone and turn on Let desktop apps access your microphone.
  5. Click into any text box, hold Right Ctrl, speak, and let go.
Speech engine won’t start? A few PCs are missing Microsoft’s free Visual C++ Runtime. Install it from microsoft.com, then restart Utterkey.
Text doesn’t appear in one particular app? Windows blocks typing into apps running “as administrator”. Run Utterkey normally, and dictate into apps that aren’t elevated.
